William R. Murray, Ph.D.

Dr. William (Bill) Murray has more than 30 years’ experience in research, design and development in the areas of Artificial intelligence, Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Data Science, Knowledge-Based Systems, Automated Reasoning, Intelligent Tutoring Systems, Ontologies, and the Semantic Web.

He served as a Senior Researcher and Data Scientist at Pearson Higher Education, where he developed designs and prototypes for advanced educational models, including tools, and products for automated scoring and formative feedback. While at Pearson, Bill developed a patented approach to automatically extract knowledge graphs from online textbooks using natural language processing and statistical relational reasoning techniques.

Bill was a Senior Research Scientist for Boeing Phantom Works and Boeing Research and Technology in Seattle, Washington where he applied natural language processing, data science, and machine learning to develop commercial applications.  He also patented an approach to automatically construct tactical training scenarios (e.g., for VBS4) from military operational orders (OPORDs). His industry experience also includes senior research positions at Teknowledge, in Palo Alto, and FMC’s Corporate Technology Center in Santa Clara. Bill has collaborated with government agencies (ONR, AFHRL, ARI, DARPA) and acted as the principal investigator for the DARPA sponsored Virtual-Combat Training System.

Bill holds multiple patents and has authored more than 40 publications and journal articles, including papers in AAAI and IJCAI. He is the author of the book Automatic Program Debugging for Intelligent Tutoring Systems, a book in the series Research Notes in Artificial Intelligence, published by Pitman Publishing, in London, England.
